Connex12 is software for the Charter Schools USA Network, a group of 55 schools in the southeastern United States. They needed a comprehensive solution for every type of user in their system: students, parents, teachers, staff, principals, and network administrators. This sampling of work includes a desktop app that administrators use to create the schedule for the entire school year and a mobile app that was created for teachers to use in their classroom.
The scheduler app was a huge challenge — all of the schools operate independently and have different needs for scheduling teachers and students. The software had to be flexible enough to accommodate for every scenario. In the past it took an administrator two months to complete the schedule, our goal was to dramatically decrease the time it took, while increasing the accuracy and ease of use.
The mobile app is designed to free teachers up as they walk around their classroom while keeping them connected to all of their recorded data and lesson plans. Teachers can take attendance, record grades, and use their mobile phone to check on the next segment. Design Methodologies: User ExperienceVisual Design

Crescendo Bio is a medical company that wanted to build a mobile app specifically targeting the needs of people with Rheumatoid Arthritis. They knew they wanted to help patients track their symptoms and communicate with their doctors, but the rest was unknown. I started with user interviews, trying to understand patients' specific needs, both physically and content-wise. Gestures had to be kept to a minimum, without using pinching or drag and drop. Features and content were designed to prioritize the daily experience of people living with RA. Given that no one really wants to spend their time tracking data on their disease process, the visual design had to be fun and upbeat, with a touch of personality and humor. MyRA was a recipient of the Metropolis Magazine Next Generation Award in 2013.Design Methodologies: User ExperienceVisual DesignIllustrationLogo Design

Background News is a video made using found footage from broadcast news programs to examine the subconscious use of color in news media, specifically the predominance of red and blue. I am currently working to convert this single-channel video into a programmatic video installation. As an installation it will consist of a grid of monitors closely installed on a wall, each monitor tuned in to a different news channel from across the globe. Custom software will identify 16:9 areas of red or blue and zoom in to display this region full screen, ignoring any information that is not within those specific RGB parameters. If the software does not detect any red or blue, the screen will go white while it waits for a positive feedback loop. The monitor bank as a whole will thus form a changing mosaic of red and blue pixelated graphics, responding live to the news broadcasts while abstracting their content. The installation then operates as a work of data visualization - mapping the fluctuating ubiquity of red and blue color schemes in global news programs.info: Single-channel video2012

Pivotal Labs Project Monitor Array is a data-driven visualization that displays all of their current projects in production. This project has two phases, the second of which is currently in production.

Phase I
Using the fanblades from our logo, each fanblade represents an individual project. The color is determined by its location and the size is based on the number of people on the team. Kinect sensors are used to detect the flow of people back and forth through the office. As someone walks in front of the display, the sensors send a virtual gust of wind across the fanblades that responds to their direction and velocity.

Phase II
The second phase of this project came after Pivotal Labs rebranded. The data and software remain the same, but the visuals were redesigned to be delivered as interactive infographics.

The Continuous Integration Monitor is a tool used by developers to keep track of the health of a project codebase. My job has CI Monitors throughout the office which display all of the projects currently being worked on. The display is designed so that a developer can raise their head and quickly check the status of their project, see it’s build history, and track the team’s velocity over time. If a project is “good” it is colored green, if “broken” it is colored red, and a project with unknown status is grey.Design Methodologies:User ExperienceVisual DesignInformation Design

Avalon is restaurant management software designed to help chefs get organized and in control of their business. It helps chefs keep track of all of their products, recipes, inventory, and orders. It is designed to keep them informed of their overall food cost and weekly budgets. It also has specific functionality designed for tablets, as users may need to do inventory in a walk-in-cooler, or verify orders on a loading dock. The visual design and brand concept were based on old-fashioned accounting ledger books, and serves as a metaphor for bringing the current analog paper and pencil process that many chefs use into the digital age.Design Methodologies: User ExperienceVisual DesignBrandingLogo Design

Sharethrough is a viral video advertising network. I was tasked with designing a reporting application that would deliver metrics on the viral status of their customers' advertising campaigns. Calling out the most important information for media buyers and planners and making it up-to-the-minute relevant were two key goals. The visual design is based on the principles of transparency and access that the company valued.Design Methodologies: User ExperienceVisual Design
