Starbucks created the Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices to "evaluate, recognize, and reward producers of high-quality sustainably grown coffee.” While this effort was successful at rewarding individual farms and screening out potential problems, they were sitting on a ton of unused data that could be extremely valuable when viewed in aggregate. The team at Green River identified this opportunity and used the data to create a business intelligence platform. We built a robust website which would allow Starbuck's team of Agronomists to search based on complex parameters and see farm performance over time, something they had never had access to before. This system provides crucial insights into patterns of environmental impact, economic trends, and maps of dangerous health threats to crops. What initially began as a farm verification system has since become a powerful data analysis tool for corporate social responsibility.
