Every year the WildEarth Guardians produces an annual
report on oil and gas pollution in the state of New Mexico. The findings show that hazardous spills are a normalized and routine part of industry operations. Oil and gas companies reported 38,153 spills in 2025, averaging 104 spills per day. The state currently has minimal penalties for such spills and lacks adequate enforcement. This report shines a light on this chronic, environmental and public health disaster, and is shared with legislators, residents of highly affected counties, and the general public.
